Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records cannabis in abandoned fields at 500 metres in April 1974. Abandoned fields are a ruderal habitat, which supports the Feral classification; the label does not say whether the plants were the descendants of a former crop. It names no use, variety or local name. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00751458, 2846 × 4096 pixels), and the place-name, latitude and longitude again at the master resolution (IIIF tiles at full scale, 6949 × 10003 pixels).

  • Printed form FLORE du NEPAL / Université de Grenoble Laboratoire de Botanique; entries by hand: Urticaceae / Cannabis sativa L. / Lieu : Bheri / Latitude : 28°26' / Longitude : 81°00' / Altitude : 500 m / Date : 15.04.74 / Observations : champs abandonnés / Collecteur : J.F. DOBREMEZ DBR NEP N° 2536 / N.P. Manandhar 74.165.
  • The place-name is one handwritten word. Bheri is the likelier reading; the letter forms would also allow Bhui. The latitude and longitude are clear.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. The label's own figures, 28°26′ N, 81°00′ E, reverse-geocode to Nighasan, Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, India, with an SRTM elevation of 144 metres against the label's 500; they cannot be the collection place as written. If the place-name is Bheri, it may refer to the Bheri river or to the former Bheri zone of mid-western Nepal, neither of which is a collection point. The province field is empty, because neither the place-name nor the coordinates places the sheet in a present-day province with confidence.

Editorial treatment

The locality field takes Bheri (reading uncertain). The collector field takes J.F. Dobremez, the form of Dobremez 1796 (1973); the collector number takes Dobremez's series number, 2536, and Manandhar's own number for the gathering, 74.165, is given in the article. The Harvard Index of Botanists records a collector N. P. Manandhar as Narayan Prasad Manandhar, born 1941, whose specimens are at Kathmandu, Edinburgh and elsewhere; the article uses that name.

Source discrepancies

  • Collectors. Label: J.F. DOBREMEZ and N.P. Manandhar 74.165. Catalogue: Dobremez only.
  • Coordinates. Label: 28°26′ N, 81°00′ E, which fall in India at 144 metres. Label altitude: 500 metres. Neither the catalogue nor GBIF gives coordinates.
