Evidentiary scope

The label gives a name, a district, a mountain range, an altitude and a date. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from Meise's image (4843 × 7171 pixels); the two readings agree.

  • Label: printed EX HERBARIO KEWENSI. / typed Cannabis sativa L. / printed Tanganyika Territory. typed Mbeya Distr. Mporoto Mts., 7000 ft. / printed B. D. Burtt No. typed 6211. / typed 18.10.1936.
  • Holder's label: Herbarium Horti Botanici Bruxellensis (Belgium); Acc. 1938.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Mporoto was not found under that spelling in OpenStreetMap, Nominatim or Wikidata (also tried: Mporoto Ridge). The range most likely meant is the Poroto Mountains east of Mbeya (Wikidata Q7230314; Swahili Milima ya Poroto, Uporoto), but no source read equates the two spellings, and the range has no mapped outline: Wikidata gives only one point, at arc-minute precision. The only OpenStreetMap object of the name, the Uporoto Mountain Nature Forest Reserve (relation 5713332), is a reserve, not the range. The label's Mbeya Distr. of 1936 was a colonial district that covered far more than today's Mbeya District. The label's 7,000 ft (about 2,130 metres) fits the range, whose highest point, Ngozi, is 2,621 metres (English Wikipedia, Poroto Mountains).

Editorial treatment

Place. The locality field takes the label's Mporoto Mts.; the province field is today's region, which contains the range under either spelling.

Elevation. The field stores the label's 7,000 ft in metres (2,134).

Collector. As for Burtt 3743 (1932), the label's initials; the page does not identify him further.
