Griffith 4686 is an accession record for a pressed Cannabis sativa specimen from East Bengal in the herbarium of William Griffith (1810–1845).[1] Naturalis Biodiversity Center holds the sheet as catalogue U.1198641, and GBIF publishes it as occurrence 2516987852.[2]
Collection and locality
The printed label is headed Herbarium of the late East India Company. It carries the handwritten number 4686, the locality East Bengal and the attribution Herb. Griffith. Its last line reads Distributed at the Royal Gardens, Kew. 1863-4.[3] The label gives no collection date and no more precise locality, altitude or habitat. A Botanisch Museum Utrecht stamp on the sheet reads 204967 B and 25 April 1967.[3]
Specimen and identification
The label identifies the material as Cannabis sativa L.[3] The occurrence record publishes the specimen under the same name and gives the collector as Herb Griffith, the number as Herb Griffith 4686 and the event date as 1863.[2]
Other sheets
The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris catalogues a sheet of Cannabis sativa from East Bengal under Griffith, W. and the number 4686, as P06884263, with the note Donné par la Direction du Jardin Royal de Kew. 1863 (given by the management of the Royal Gardens, Kew, 1863).[4] Its number, place and Kew distribution agree with this sheet's label.
In a 1944 review of flax and hemp, Auguste Chevalier placed Griffith's numbers 4685 and 4686 in Afghanistan, citing them under Cannabis sativa var. vulgaris forma spontanea, his form with slender stems and small, very hairy leaflets. His plate VII figures a female plant of Herb. Griffiths n° 4686 as spontané (growing wild) in Afghanistan.[5]: 63–64 This sheet's label and the Paris catalogue give the number's place as East Bengal.[3][4]
