Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The sample is prepared fibre, a made material and not a plant. Its tag records hemp fibre from Lao Kay in July, valued by the local pound, for making clothes, and calls the plant a cultivated species. It does not say who grew or prepared the fibre, where in Lao Kay the plants grew, in which year, or how the sample reached Paris. The accession is classified Other: the tag gives a valuation and the plant's status as a species, not where or by whom the crop was grown, and it is undated. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the museum's photograph at full resolution (3327 × 5270 pixels; photograph J. Morel).

  • Tag (cloth with a metal eyelet, typed, torn at the upper left and along the lower edge): Gai dâ (the rest of the word lost to a tear) chanvre canmabis gigantea / Tonkin: Lao kay / Juillet / Livre indigène 600 grammes / Valeur: 0 20 à 2,fr. followed by figures struck through in ink, not read / Confection des vêtem (torn) / (torn) èce cultiv (torn). Written in ink above the value line: 0,54.
  • Museum label (printed head HERBARIUM MUSEI PARISIENSIS, filled in by hand): Cannabis gigantea / Chanvre / Gai dâ[illisible] / Tonkin : Lao kay / Juillet / Confection des vêtements / Espèce cultivée. Barcode label Herbier Muséum Paris, P00727703.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Lao kay names both the town of Lào Cai and the province around it: Chevalier's label of 1913 reads Tonkin. Province de Lao-Kay for Cha-pa, about 20 km from the town in a straight line. The tag does not say which is meant, so the province is the finest place it names with certainty. The province field takes Lào Cai Province, the present-day province, and the locality field gives the place in its present spelling with the tag's in brackets.

Editorial treatment

Accession type. Prepared fibre is entered as an accession, like Kew's hemp fibres EBC 43415 (s.d.) and EBC 43416 (s.d.) and the Missouri fibre Ojascastro 063d (2022). The collection method takes Herbarium specimen, the nearest value the infobox offers; it has none for fibre.

Title. The tag names no collector and gives no number and no year, so the title takes the Anon. s.n. form with the place in its present spelling, and (s.d.).

Scientific name. The field stores the catalogue's Cannabis gigantea Crevost as written. The tag's canmabis is a typing slip and is quoted as typed.

Local name. The tag's Gai dâ is torn within its second word, and the museum's label marks the rest illegible. The local-name field is left empty rather than completing the word.
