Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The sheet documents Cannabis labelled India, in the Gower Collection, which was purchased in 1896. It gives no place within India, no date of collection, no collector, no habitat and no use. The accession is classified Other and carries no conservation priority.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00248613, 2750 × 4096 pixels).

  • Label, threaded onto the stem: Cannabis sativa / India (encircled).
  • Printed slip, foot: GOWER COLLECTION. / Purchased 1896.

Georeferencing

No place below the country is given, so none is asserted.

Editorial treatment

The title takes the Anon. s.n. form, as Anon. s.n., Samulcottah (1822) does, because nothing on the sheet names a collector. The year is the purchase recorded on the slip, in the (by <year>) form: the sheet existed by 1896. The collector and collector number fields are left empty.

The collector in Edinburgh's catalogue is William Hugh Gower. The slip says only that the sheet came from the Gower Collection, purchased in 1896, and nothing on the sheet says that Gower gathered the plant.

Source discrepancies

  • Collector. Edinburgh's catalogue and GBIF: Gower, William Hugh. The sheet names no collector; its slip reads Gower Collection. Purchased 1896., which is two years after Gower's death in 1894 (Harvard Index of Botanists). The infobox leaves the collector empty.
