Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The slip places the seedlings on Chinese ploughland (на китайских пашнях), east of the boundary of the Chinese Eastern Railway's experimental field near Harbin, in May 1924: they grew on farmed land outside the experimental field. It does not say whether they were sown, and gives no use. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1924. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (TIE 00004152, 1,000 × 1,659 pixels).

  • Slip (Russian, ink): 19 12/V 24 г. (the day and month written between the two halves of the year) / M.N.-E. (purple stamp) / a number in pencil, read as 62 or 82, struck through / Cannabis sativa L. / Та-ма (or Га-ма) . Конопля. / 14524 (pencil) / Окрестности Харбинскаго опытнаго / поля К.В.ж.д. / К востоку от грани опытнаго поля / на китайских пашнях / Собрал and an abbreviation, read once as Инн. К. and once as Инж. К.
  • Form (printed HERBIER): Famille Moraceae, 大麻科 faint in pencil / Nom scientifique Cannabis sativa L.; the number, station, locality and date lines blank. A second number, 1442, above the form.
  • Barcode TJNHM HERBARIUM (TIE); a faint pencilled 158.7 at the foot of the form, read in one reading only.

The readings agree on the place and the plant. One read the date as 12 May 1924 and allowed 19 May; a third look at the image reads 12 over V, between 19 and 24: 12 May 1924. They differ on the abbreviation after Собрал, read as Инн. and as Инж. (engineer), and on the first letter of Та-ма.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The slip places the seedlings east of the boundary of the Chinese Eastern Railway's experimental field near Harbin. No source read gives the field's position. Harbin's own point would stand for a city, today a prefecture-level city of about 53,000 km² (Wikidata), not for the field's edge. The province field takes Heilongjiang, the province of Harbin.

Editorial treatment

Title. The slip gives no number and no collector's name in full, so the title takes Anon., s.n. (no number), the place and the year.

Collector. The slip's abbreviation was read as Инн. К. and as Инж. К. (engineer K.); neither names a collector, and the collector field is left empty.

Classification. Seedlings on ploughland are plants of a farmed field. The slip does not say whether they were sown as a crop; the page takes them, on the ploughland, as plants of the local cultivation.

Date. The slip writes the date in a form used in Russian, the day and month set between the two halves of the year; 12 May 1924 is stored.

Province. Harbin is in Heilongjiang. The catalogue gives Inner Mongolia.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium places the sheet in Inner Mongolia; the slip places it near Harbin, in Heilongjiang.
