Scheppig s.n. is a reproduction accession of Cannabis known from a single herbarium sheet, gathered in 1891 by C. Scheppig from a plant he had raised from seed received from Th. v. Heldreich of Athens, Greece. The Swedish Museum of Natural History holds the sheet as S21-461.[1][2]
The label
The museum's catalogue transcribes the label as Aus Samen erzogen welchen ich von Herrn Prof. Dr. Th. v. Heldreich aus Athen erhielt. Diese Art liefert Haschisch., German for "Raised from seed which I received from Prof. Dr. Th. v. Heldreich of Athens. This species yields hashish."[1] The second sentence is the label's statement about the species as a kind, that it is a source of hashish.
The label does not say where the seed had been grown before it was sent, or where Scheppig raised the plant. The catalogue gives the year 1891 and, for continent, Cult. (cultivated), and leaves the country, province and district blank.[1] GBIF's copy carries the label text as its locality.[2]
Collector and seed source
Harvard's Index of Botanists lists the collector as August Adolf Carl Scheppig (1834–1904), known as Carl.[3] The Th. v. Heldreich of the label is the botanist Theodor Heinrich Hermann von Heldreich (1822–1902), whose collections the same index places in Greece, its islands and Asia Minor.[4]
Specimen and identification
The museum files the sheet under Cannabis sativa L., and its catalogue gives the determination as Cannabis indica, without naming who made it. The catalogue lists no image of the sheet.[1]
