Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on one herbarium sheet of a plant raised from seed. It shows that seed which Scheppig had from Theodor von Heldreich of Athens was grown and pressed in 1891. It does not show where the seed was gathered or grown before Heldreich sent it, where Scheppig raised the plant, or how either was used. No seed of the lot is known to survive. The page therefore carries no locality, coordinates, classification or conservation priority.
The label's sentence Diese Art liefert Haschisch ("this species yields hashish") is quoted as the label's own statement about the species. It is not evidence that this plant or its seed lot was used for hashish, and the article does not treat it as such.
Label reading
The sheet has not been seen. The text is the museum's catalogue transcription, read on 11 October 2026. The catalogue lists no image, and GBIF's copy (occurrence 3776338330) carries no media.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The plant was raised from seed, and the label does not say where it was grown. Athens is where the seed was sent from, and the label does not say where the seed was grown before that, so a point at Athens would put a grow-out at the place its seed was dispatched from.
Editorial treatment
Accession type. The sheet is a grow-out voucher, so the accession is a reproduction. No accession of the seed lot it came from exists, so no parent is set.
Country. The country field gives Greece because the seed was sent from Athens by Heldreich. The label does not state where the seed was raised, and seed passing through Heldreich's hands in Athens need not have been Greek, so the country is the seed's place of dispatch, not an established place of origin.
Dates. The collection date is empty because the date the seed was gathered is unknown. 1891, the year the catalogue gives for the sheet, is entered as the sample harvest date, and the title takes it as the sheet's year.
Sourcing type. Unknown provenance: the label names who sent the seed, not where it came from.
Collector and seed source. The collector field keeps the catalogue's C. Scheppig. The label's Th. v. Heldreich aus Athen is read as Theodor von Heldreich (1822–1902) on the name, the initials and the city; Harvard's index lists no other Heldreich with those initials. The index's collector notes place Scheppig's own collections in Berlin and Lusatia, among other places. That does not establish where this plant was grown, and the article does not say. The English Wikipedia's Carl Scheppig is a different man, the Berlin architect Carl Friedrich Adolph Scheppig (1803–1885), who died six years before the sheet was made; the collector is not linked to it.
Determination. The scientific name field gives the catalogue's determination, Cannabis indica; the museum files the sheet under Cannabis sativa L.
Title. The catalogue gives no collection number, so the title takes s.n. with the sheet's year.
Source discrepancies
- GBIF's copy gives the scientific name Cannabis sativa L. and no determination; the museum's catalogue gives the determination Cannabis indica.
