Identification of biogeographically informative microssatelite markers for Brazilian Cannabis sativa samples: a machine learning approach for forensic origin prediction
International Journal of Legal Medicine
Tests microsatellite (SSR) markers for tracing the geographic origin of Cannabis sativa seized in Brazil, using genomic data from 38 samples from Paraguay, Colombia, the Marijuana Polygon region and a group of foreign commercial strains. Machine-learning feature selection combined with support vector classifiers assigned every sample correctly using nine SSRs, and the same markers separated the four groups in ordination and clustering. The authors note that larger sample groups are needed before the panel is used in investigations. The study concerns the provenance genetics of trafficked material, not landraces as such.
