Podlech 12731 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Baharak, south-east of Faydzabad in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, on 25 September 1965 by Dieter Podlech. The label records the plant as frequent on roadsides and in fields, and names it Cannabis ruderalis. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E00405502.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The typed label is headed Staatsherbarium München and Pflanzen aus Nordost-Afghanistan. It reads Prov. Badakhshan: Baharak südöstlich von Faydzabad, bei der Alakadarie, häufig an Wegrändern und in Feldern, that is, Baharak south-east of Faydzabad, at the district office, frequent on roadsides and in fields, with the date 25.9.1965 and leg. D. Podlech Nr. 12731.[3] The catalogue gives the same locality and date.[1]
The coordinate is Baharak, the seat of Baharak District, as Wikidata places it.[4] The label's Alakadarie is the district office of which Baharak is the seat.
Specimen and identification
The Munich label names the plant Cannabis ruderalis Janiszewski.[3] A revision slip of the Natural History Museum, Vienna, printed for Flora Iranica, redetermines the sheet in Karl Heinz Rechinger's name in 1977: Cannabis sativa L. subsp. indica (Lam.) Small + Cronquist.[3] The catalogue gives Cannabis sativa L.[1] Edinburgh publishes the sheet image under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence.[3]
Sequenced duplicate
The Edinburgh sheet is a duplicate distributed from Munich. Another sheet of the same gathering, at the Munich herbarium as MSB 64645, was sampled for DNA by Christopher J. Grassa's herbarium-genomics project at Harvard University; the sample is published as BioSample SAMEA112688125, collected by D Podlech under number 12731 on 25 September 1965.[5] The Edinburgh sheet itself has not been sampled.
