Partridge s.n., Aracataca (HUA 536) is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa: a female and a male stem of one plant, gathered on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta near Aracataca, in northern Colombia, on 21 September 1973 by William L. Partridge. The two stems are mounted on separate sheets held in the herbarium of the University of Antioquia (HUA) in Medellín as HUA 536 and HUA 533.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The herbarium's catalogue gives the locality as Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. cerca de Aracataca (near Aracataca), in Magdalena, and the date 21 September 1973, and enters the collector as Partridge W..[1] Partridge wrote the chapter on cannabis in a Colombian municipio in the volume Cannabis and Culture.[3]
Field observations
Partridge's note on HUA 536, as the catalogue transcribes it, reads Female stem take from same plant as following male stem.[1] Above it he wrote in Spanish la misma mata Hembra y macho (the same plant, female and male).[4] The note on HUA 533 describes a male stem taken from the same plant as the preceding female stem.[2]
Specimen and identification
The catalogue files both sheets as Cannabis sativa L.[1][2] An airmail envelope is mounted on HUA 536, addressed to Richard Evans Schultes at Harvard: Dr. Richard Evans Schultes, Harvard University, c/o Professor Doel D. Soejarto. Its printed return address, cut off at the left edge, is a department of anthropology at the University of Florida in Gainesville.[4] The herbarium holds two more sheets Partridge gathered the same day, each a female plant with a name: Partridge s.n., Aracataca (1973), HUA 534 (La Morada) and Partridge s.n., Aracataca (1973), HUA 537 (La Blanca).
