Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The two notes say that the female stem and the male stem came from the same plant, and the label of HUA 536 adds in Spanish la misma mata Hembra y macho (the same plant, female and male). The plant has no name of its own on the labels. It was gathered the same day and place as Partridge's two plants known by local names, La Morada and La Blanca, and is classed with them. Drug-type cannabis from other regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, from the early 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so the date of this sheet does not exclude introduced seed. The class rests on the label: a plant gathered with plants of the place known by local names. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. It does not say what the plant was grown for or from what seed, and it records no continuing population; no conservation priority is assigned.
Identifier
The page joins two catalogue entries into one accession because each note points to the other: HUA 536 is the female stem from the same plant as the following male stem, and HUA 533 the male stem from the same plant as the preceding female stem. Partridge's other two sheets from that day are female plants with names of their own, so HUA 533 is the only male stem the female stem's note can refer to. The catalogue numbers do not follow Partridge's order.
Georeferencing
The label places the gathering at western slopes of the Sierra Nevada near Aracataca. The herbarium's catalogue publishes 11.149388, -74.126248 for the sheet, with an uncertainty of 8,630 m and an elevation of 450 m that the label does not give. That point lies in Santa Marta municipality, about 30 km north of Aracataca municipality's northern boundary and 62 km from the town of Aracataca, so it does not fit the label and is not used. The point 10.65, -73.88 is the middle of Aracataca municipality's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 11890329, about 1,747 km²), which runs east from the town on the plain up the western slopes of the Sierra; the point falls inside it, at about 1,300 m. It is an area point for the municipality, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 24 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. Partridge gave the sheets no number, and the herbarium holds four of them from the same day and place. The titles take the collector, s.n., the place and the year, and add the herbarium's catalogue number to tell the three gatherings apart.
Collector. The catalogue enters Partridge W.; the label, read on a photograph of the sheet, gives William L. Partridge. The collector field keeps the label's initials form.
Title number. The title takes HUA 536, the female stem, whose label photograph carries the collector's full note.
Image. The image is a phone photograph of the sheet in the herbarium, at 800 × 1440 pixels; neither the herbarium's catalogue on GBIF nor any other portal publishes an image of it. Readings marked uncertain could not be settled at that resolution.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue's transcription of HUA 533 reads Male stem taken from same plantas preceding female stem; plantas is read as plant as. Its transcription of HUA 536 has take for taken.
Sources not yet read
- Partridge's chapter in Cannabis and Culture (1975), pp. 147–172, and his 1974 University of Florida thesis have not been read for these gatherings. Either may say more about the planting the sheets were cut from.
- The label of HUA 533 has not been photographed.
