Police seize 44 kg of ganja plants from a village backyard at Nangpur in Gadchiroli

The Times of India reported that a team from the Local Crime Branch and Kotgul police raided Nangpur village in Korchi taluka in northern Gadchiroli on 6 September 2026 and seized 44 kg of ganja plants valued at close to 22 lakh rupees. According to the report the crop was growing in the backyard of a house belonging to a 58-year-old resident, who was arrested and remanded to one day of police custody, and a case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at Kotgul police station. The superintendent of police, M Ramesh, said that the receding of Maoist influence had let security forces extend patrols and surveillance into interior villages. The report notes that this crop was grown inside a village settlement rather than deep in forest, and that investigators estimate ganja fetches around 50,000 rupees per kilogram in the district.
