China schedules synthetic cannabinoids as a full class of controlled substances, effective 1 July 2021
The Ministry of Public Security, the National Health Commission and the National Medical Products Administration jointly announced class-wide scheduling of synthetic cannabinoids together with eighteen other new psychoactive substances, to take effect on 1 July 2021. Officials said 103 synthetic cannabinoids had been detected domestically out of 297 known worldwide, and described China as the first country to schedule the class as a whole. The announcement notes that these compounds do not depend on cannabis cultivation, being laboratory analogues rather than plant material.
