National Narcotics Control Commission publishes the 2016 China Drug Situation Report, attributing eradication results to satellite and drone surveillance

The National Narcotics Control Commission Office published its annual drug situation report for 2016. It records 147 mu and 1,390,000 cannabis plants found and eradicated nationally, given as falls of 92 per cent by area and 6 per cent by plant count on the previous year, and attributes the results to a campaign designated Tianmu-16 using satellite remote sensing and drones. The report states that large-scale illegal cultivation of narcotic source plants has been essentially eliminated nationwide. The area and plant-count figures imply a roughly twelvefold rise in planting density on eradicated land within a single year, which the report does not explain.
