Nazarov 13038 is a herbarium accession of cannabis gathered in a grove near an aul on the right bank of the Syr Darya, between the river and the railway station of Teren-Uzyak, today's Terenozek in Kyzylorda Region, Kazakhstan, on 25 May 1930 by M. I. Nazarov, who determined it as Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. The Moscow University Herbarium holds the sheet as MW0818718.[1]
Collection and locality
The printed label is that of the Государственный трест новых лубяных волокон („Новлубтрест") (State Trust for New Bast Fibres) and its Syr Darya soil and botanical expedition of 1930: М. И. Назаров. Растения долины р. Сыр-Дарьи. (M. I. Nazarov, Plants of the Syr Darya valley). Its printed lines for the map sheet and the position are completed with the sheet of the ten-verst map of Turkestan (row III, sheet 3) and 45° 2′ сев. шир. 34° 36′ вост. долг. от Пулк. (45°2′ N, 34°36′ E of Pulkovo), and the place reads прав. бер. Сыр-Дарьи; между ст. ж.д. Терень-Узяк и Сыр-Дарьей. В роще бл. аула. (right bank of the Syr Darya, between the railway station Teren-Uzyak and the Syr Darya; in a grove near an aul). It is dated 25 мая (25 May), numbered № 13038 and signed as collected and determined by М. Назаров.[2] The catalogue gives the collector, the date as 23 May 1930 and a point, with no number or locality.[1] Pulkovo, the observatory near St Petersburg, was the prime meridian of Russian maps of the time; counted from Greenwich, the label's position is 45°02′ N, 64°56′ E.
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries one slender stem with palmate leaves along it and at its top.[2] Nazarov named the plant Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. on the label. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa. Under it lies an earlier typed slip numbered RB 180 that names the plant Cannabis sativa L.; only part of its printed heading, from the Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, shows past the later slip. It is the form of Small's annotation of 1 September 1974. The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L.[2][1]
