Shimonita General Population 1901 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from Japan on 20 April 1901 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 6309.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
The seed came in a collection of miscellaneous seeds from the Tokyo Seed and Plant Company, received on 20 April 1901. The department's printed inventory lists five hemps in it, each under a name: Shimonita (this lot), Hiroshima (NPG-JPN-UNK-0019010003), Tochigi (NPG-JPN-UNK-0019010004), Aidzu (NPG-JPN-UNK-0019010005) and Iwate.[2] The inventory gives no description of any of them.
