Calcutta General Population 1901 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from Calcutta on 1 April 1901 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 6164.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
The department's printed inventory lists the lot under Cannabis indica, from Calcutta, "received through Prof. D. Prain, superintendent of the Sibpur Botanical Garden", in April 1901. Its only note on the seed is that hashish "is extracted from the resin of this plant".[2] Two months after this lot, the department received a second lot of Indian hemp from the garden itself, NPG-IND-WEB-0019010002.[3]
