Malanyu General Population 1916 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from Malanyu, in Hebei, China, on 9 February 1917 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 44206.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
Frank N. Meyer, the department's agricultural explorer, collected the seed; the department received his consignment on 9 February 1917. In the printed inventory this lot is his number 2334a, Malanyu, Chihli Province, 25 November 1916, under a Chinese name glossed "thread hemp": "A variety of hemp, producing very strong fiber of medium length. Thrives especially well on lands recently cleared of brush or timber."[2]
