Maxwell 98-468 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on the island of Don Long in Khong District, Champasak, Laos, on 24 April 1998 by J.F. Maxwell. Naturalis holds the sheet as L.1592597, barcode L 0597232.[1] The label records the plant as planted on the banks of the Mekong, smoked, and fed to pigs.
Collection and locality
The typed label is that of the CMU Herbarium, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University. Its heading reads FLORA OF THAILAND with THAILAND struck out and LAOS typed beside it, and it is stamped CULTIVATED & INTRODUCED. It gives the province as CHAMPASAK, the district as Khong, the location as Don Long (island), west side, sandy banks of the Mekong River, the elevation as 75 m and the date as 24 April 1998.[2] The habitat line reads open, seasonally submerged area along the river; sandstone bedrock.[2][3]
Recorded local name and use
The label gives the common name as sah. Its notes end dried parts smoked for a narcotic effect, also said to be given to pigs to make them eat.[2]
Cultivation observation
The notes open planted, erect, branching herb 1.5 m tall, basal diameter 25 mm.[2]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a whole female plant; the sex sign ♀ is drawn at the head of the label. The notes describe stems, tepals, ovary green; stigmas & styles whitish; blades dull dark green above, dull light green underneath. The label names the family CANNABIDACEAE and the plant Cannabis sativa L., and records three duplicates.[2] Naturalis records the plant as Cannabis sativa L. and publishes the sheet image under a CC0 dedication.[1] Maxwell 97-798 is an earlier cannabis gathering by the same collector, in Thailand.
