Martin 1860 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa bought in the market at Vientiane, Laos, in May 1973. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle holds the sheet as P06780075,[1] and the Economic Botany herbarium at Harvard holds a duplicate as ECON 00449840.[2] The label records the plant as grown in a garden, sold in the market, and used as a drug and in popular medicine.
Collection and locality
The handwritten label gives Lieu: Vendue sur le marché (sold in the market), Prov.: Vientiane, Pays: Laos and Date: 5/1973. It leaves the altitude blank.[3] The catalogue gives the locality as Vientiane, vendue sur la marché.[1]
Recorded local name and use
The label gives Nom vernac.: Kan Xa mè, glossed on the label itself as = plante f[emelle], the female plant. Under Observ. et Usages it records stupéfiant (seulement la plante ♀) and médecine populaire (a drug), the female plant only, and popular medicine.[3]
Cultivation observation
The label gives the vegetation and soil as cultivée dans jardin (cultivated in a garden), and the biological type as herbe dure.[3] The catalogue repeats Cultivée dans jardin.[1]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries several cut stems. The label names the family Cannabinaceae and the plant Cannabis, and notes fruit → pied femelle (fruit), so a female plant.[3] The Paris catalogue records Cannabis sativa L., determined by Querido.[1] Harvard files its duplicate under Cannabis sativa subsp. indica (Lamarck) E. Small & Cronquist.[2]
