Makino s.n., Meguro is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered at Meguro, then a village of Ebara District and now a ward of Tokyo, Japan, on 19 October 1922 by the botanist Tomitarō Makino. Meise Botanic Garden holds the sheet, number 41857 of the Makino Herbarium, as BR0000023200203.[1]
Collection and locality
The label is the printed distribution label of the Makino Herbarium, From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino (1862—1957), the pioneer botanist of Japan, with the herbarium's number stamped at the top and the entries typed. On this sheet the number is 41857, and the entries read Cannabis sativa L., Meguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo Pref., Date: Oct. 19, 1922 and Coll.: Tomitarô MAKINO.[2] The label gives Makino's death year, so it was printed after 1957. The catalogue gives the same collector, place and date.[1] Meguro became a town on 1 December 1922, six weeks after the gathering, and was joined with the neighbouring town of Hibusuma as Meguro ward of Tokyo City in 1932; the label's Meguro-ku is the later form. A second printed label, of the herbarium of the Brussels botanic garden, carries the note Acc. 1967.[2]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a short shoot with dense flowering clusters and narrow leaves.[2] The label names it Cannabis sativa L., determined by G. Murata; the year of the determination is typed over and cannot be read. The catalogue files the sheet under the same name.[2][1] A printed slip above the label records that leaf tissue was removed for DNA for the project Population dynamics in Cannabaceae by Christopher J. Grassa of the Harvard University Herbaria on 3 July 2018.[2]
