Makino s.n., Mama is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered at Mama, then in the town of Ichikawa and now in the city of Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in August 1923 by the botanist Tomitarō Makino. The gathering was distributed under the Makino Herbarium's number 120389. Meise Botanic Garden holds a sheet as BR0000023200227;[1] duplicates are held in Pittsburgh and Berkeley.
Collection and locality
The label is the printed distribution label of the Makino Herbarium, From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino (1862—1957), one of the pioneer botanists of Japan, with the herbarium's number stamped at the top and the entries typed. On the Meise sheet the number is 120389, and the entries read Cannabis sativa L., Mama, Ichikawa City, Chiba Pref., Date: Aug., 1923 and Coll.: Tomitaro MAKINO.[2] The label gives Makino's death year, so it was printed after 1957; the determination on it is dated 1960. The catalogue gives the same collector, place and month.[1] In 1923 Mama belonged to the town of Ichikawa, in Higashikatsushika District; Ichikawa became a city in 1934. A second printed label, of the national botanic garden of Belgium, carries the note Acc. '83.[2]
Two duplicates of the gathering are catalogued: CM250365 in the herbarium of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History,[3] and UC1442937 in the University and Jepson Herbaria, which records the number 120389.[4] Neither is imaged.
Specimen and identification
The Meise sheet carries a tall branched stem with loose flowering branches and narrow leaves.[2] The label names it Cannabis sativa L., determined by K. Hiyama in 1960, the name the catalogues record.[2][1] A printed slip above the label records that leaf tissue was removed for DNA for the project Population dynamics in Cannabaceae by Christopher J. Grassa of the Harvard University Herbaria on 2 July 2018.[2]
Sequence data
Leaf tissue from the Berkeley duplicate was sampled by the same herbarium-genomics project coordinated by Christopher J. Grassa. It was made public on 24 February 2025 as BioSample SAMEA112688786 (voucher UC<USA-CA>:1442937), which gives the date as August 1923, the place as Mama, Ichikawa City, Chiba Pref., the collector as Tomitaro Makino and the plant as staminate.[5] Four whole-genome sequencing runs from it (ERR10949853 and ERR10949998 to ERR10950000) were published under the European Nucleotide Archive study PRJEB59906 on 19 April 2025.[6]
