Discussion
Why Mae Chan is a growing area
- The Highland Research and Development Institute's profile of Ban Huai Kang Pla (Pa Tueng subdistrict, village no. 15) lists cannabis among the vegetables the villagers grew for their own use in the past, with opium, tomatoes, cabbage, chillies and coriander. The profile is undated; it cites letters of May 2015 and an institute decision of 26 September 2016.
- The status is Historical: the profile puts the growing in the past and gives no years, and nothing since says either way. The profile does not say which of the village's peoples grew it.
Extent and border
- The map border is the whole of Mae Chan District as it now stands (OpenStreetMap), about 740 km². Ban Huai Kang Pla, placed from the coordinates printed in the profile (UTM zone 47N, 580071.57 E, 2224908.52 N), lies inside it.
- The Mae Fa Luang area, with Doi Mae Salong, was separated from Mae Chan in 1992 as a minor district and became a full district in 1996. A source written before 1992 that says "Mae Chan" may mean land now in Mae Fa Luang; this page follows the present district. The institute's Mae Salong profile lists Pa Tueng under Mae Chan.
Not used
- A Department of Agriculture seed study (Thai Agricultural Research Journal, 2023) tested a Thai landrace cultivar named แม่จันทร์ (Mae chan). The paper does not say where the seed came from, and the name is spelled differently from the district (แม่จัน), so it is not tied to this area.
- A dispensary's website describes a cannabis farm at village no. 4, Pa Tueng. It is sales copy and is not used.
