Liu 1046 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected near a field side at Kangting (Kangding), then in the province of Sikang and now in Sichuan, China, at 2,500 m on 12 August 1934 by C. S. Liu for the West China Academy of Science. The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing holds two sheets, PE 00578009[1] and PE 00777006[2].
Collection and locality
PE 00578009 carries a typed form of the West China Academy of Science (中國西部科學院), headed 西康植物 Flora of Sikang. It gives the number 1046, the date Aug. 12, 1934, the locality Kaagting-hsien (printed, for Kangting) and Che-te-shan (typed), the altitude 2500 m., the habitat near the field side and the collector C. S. Liu.[3] PE 00777006 carries a Flora of China form of the Institute of Botany, National Academy of Peiping, completed with stamps: the number 1046, the year 1934, the locality 西康 康定 (Sikang, Kangting) and the collector 劉振書.[4] Both sheets carry the Academy's tag, 中國西部科學院四川植物廿三年採集 第1046號 (West China Academy of Science, Szechwan plants, collected in year 23 of the Republic, 1934, no. 1046).[3][4] The catalogue gives the number, the year and Sichuan, with the collector as C. S. Liu for one sheet and 刘振书 for the other.[1][2]
Specimen and identification
Both sheets carry male plants with large palmate leaves of seven to nine narrow, serrate leaflets and branched flowering tops. The West China form describes a perennial herb, its leaves soft, dark green above and greyish green below, and its flowers green. A slip on PE 00578009 names the plant Cannabis sativa L., determined by W. K. Hsia in 1936; a later slip on PE 00777006 names it Cannabis sativa Linn.[3][4] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
