Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The form places the plant near the field side at Kangting in August 1934. It gives no use. A field margin is outside the crop. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (PE 00578009, 981 × 1,440 pixels; PE 00777006, 1,026 × 1,440 pixels).

  • PE 00578009, West China form (printed 中國西部科學院西康植物 / FLORA OF SIKANG, typed): Field No. 1046 / Date Aug. 12, 1934 (1934 printed) / Locality Kaagting-hsien (printed) Che-te-shan (typed) / Altitude 2500 m. / Habitat near the field side / Habit perennial herb / Leaf soft, dark green above, gragish green below / Flower green / Family Moraceae / Name Cannabis / Collector C. S. Liu (printed). Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit W.K.Hsia 1936. SZECHUAN province stamp; Fan Memorial Institute of Biology stamp; red number.
  • PE 00777006, Peiping form (printed INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA, stamped): Field No. 1046 / Date 1934 / Locality 西康 康定 / Collector 劉振書. Determination slip: Cannabis sativa Linn. / 定名人 (a signature, not read) / 86年1月. Stamped number 611464.
  • Tag on both sheets (red string), by hand: 中國西部科學院四川植物廿三年採集 / 第 1046 號.

The two readings agree. They differ only on the red number on PE 00578009 (read as 4531 and as 47531), and one reading marks the tag's year characters uncertain.

Georeferencing

Kangting is Kangding (康定), today a county-level city of Garzê, Sichuan; 西康 康定 is written in characters on PE 00777006. Che-te-shan may be Zheduo Shan (折多山), the mountain and pass near the town, but only by sound, and its summit stands at 4,697 m against the label's 2,500 m, so it is not used. The point 29.96, 101.74 is the middle of Kangding's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 2785527, about 11,597 km²), checked to fall inside it. SRTM gives 4,122 m there and 2,811 m at the town, against the label's 2,500 m: the plant grew below the town, in a valley the label does not name. The present area is taken for the county of 1934. It is an area point for the county, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 61 km.

Editorial treatment

Two sheets, one accession. The sheets share the number, the year, the place and the Academy's tag. The repository and catalogue number are PE 00578009's.

Collector. The West China form names C. S. Liu and the Peiping form 劉振書 (Liu Zhenshu, Liu Chen-shu in the romanisation of the time, whose initials are C. S.). The page takes them for one collector, whom no source found identifies. The collector field takes C. S. Liu; the name is not linked.

Province. Sikang (西康), the province on the West China form, no longer exists; Kangding lies in today's Sichuan, and the province field takes Sichuan.

Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 2,500 m.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
