Lace 436 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered by J. H. Lace at Barseri in the Baspa Valley on 27 July 1890. The labels place Barseri in Bashahr State; the Baspa Valley is now in Kinnaur District, Himachal Pradesh, India. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the gathering on three herbarium sheets, catalogue E00248810, catalogue E00248807 and catalogue E00248606.[1][2][3] GBIF publishes them as occurrence 574991297, occurrence 575211987 and occurrence 575359486.[4][5][6]
Collection and locality
E00248810 and E00248807 carry printed labels headed Flora of Bashahr, North-Western Himalayas and marked Herb. J. H. Lace. Both give the habitat as Barseri, the number 436 and the date 27 July 1890.[7][8] E00248810 adds an altitude of 9000 ft, about 2,743 m.[7]
The label on E00248606 gives the locality as Barseri – Baspa Valley and Bashahr State, with the same date and an altitude of 9,000 feet.[9] Each of the three sheets also carries a printed field tag, Field No. 436, Herb. J. H. Lace.[7][8][9]
Specimen and identification
All three labels name the plant Cannabis sativa Linn.[7][8][9] The label on E00248606 also gives the family as N.O. Urticaceae and a literature reference to volume V, page 487. It carries the pencilled note Confirmed at Kew by Dr Stapf.[9]
E00248807 is stamped REC MAY 1891. E00248606 carries the printed note Herb. J. H. Lace. Purchased 1918.[8][9] The catalogue records all three sheets as Cannabis sativa L., collected by John Henry Lace.[1][2][3]
