Lörzing 6821 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium sheet collected by J.A. Lörzing near Berastagi on the Karo plateau, Sumatra, on 23 July 1919. Naturalis Biodiversity Center holds the sheet as catalogue L.1592671.[1] GBIF records it as preserved specimen occurrence 2513890865, identified as Cannabis sativa L. by J.J. Smith.[2] The record fixes a locality, date, coordinates, and elevation, but does not establish whether the source plant was cultivated, spontaneous, or an escape and therefore does not support a landrace or feral classification.
Collection and locality
The label locality reads “Sumatra, Karo hoogvlakte bij Brastagi” (“Sumatra, Karo high plateau near Brastagi”), using an older spelling of Berastagi. Lörzing assigned the gathering his field number 6821 and collected it on 23 July 1919.[2] The digitised record gives coordinates of 3.18333, 98.51667 and records the label elevation as 1,300 metres.[2]
Specimen and identification
The pressed sheet is held in the Naturalis herbarium in Leiden.[1] Naturalis provides a digitised image under a CC0 public-domain dedication.[1] The institutional catalogue number, L.1592671, is distinct from Lörzing's collector number 6821; the specimen's taxonomic identification is credited to J.J. Smith.[2]
Evidentiary limits
The specimen documents Cannabis sativa at a named highland locality on a specific date. It records no variety name, local name, preparation, or use, and it does not establish a continuing population or living germplasm holding. As a product of colonial-era botanical collecting in the Netherlands East Indies, it is evidence of that survey enterprise as well as of the plant it preserves.
