Koelz 692 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected by Walter Koelz at Sisu, now generally written Sissu, in Lahaul and Spiti District, Himachal Pradesh, India, on 25 July 1930. The New York Botanical Garden holds the sheet as catalogue 1414432.[1] GBIF publishes it as preserved specimen occurrence 1929949596.[2]
Collection and locality
Koelz completed an Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute field label headed Flora of Lahul. It gives his collection number 692, the locality Sisu, the habitat Door yard, an altitude of 10,000 feet and the date 25 July 1930.[3] The stated altitude converts to 3,048 m and is stored in the infobox.
Field observations
The field label records the common name Bhang and describes the plant as 6½ feet tall, with pistillate green flowers tinged with purple.[3] Koelz added: Roasted seeds eaten and leaves smoked as drug. Also cultivated.[3]
Specimen and identification
The original labels identify the specimen as Cannabis sativa L. In August 1975, Ernest Small determined it as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica (Lam.) E.Small & Cronquist, the name under which GBIF publishes the occurrence.[3][2] The mounted material is fruiting and preserves roots, stems, leaves and inflorescences.[3]
