1996 IUB Sakon Nakhon Th-2 Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis indica grown from seed whose labels give its country of origin as Thailand (Sakon Nokhon), that is, Sakon Nakhon in Thailand. It is known from two herbarium sheets, which Karl W. Hillig made on 17 and 18 October 1996 from plants grown in a greenhouse of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, under the parallel code Th-2. The herbarium of Indiana University holds them as IND-0149680 and IND-0149682.[1][2] GBIF publishes them as preserved specimen occurrences 5070718744 and 5070721864.[3][4]
Seed lot
Both typed labels name the plant Cannabis indica Lam. and place it in the narrow-leaflet drug biotype. Both read Country of origin: Thailand (Sakon Nokhon) and Seed source: HortaPharm B.V., Amsterdam, Holland and carry the parallel code Th-2. Their source codes differ: 91-170.20 on IND-0149680 and 91-170.22 on IND-0149682.[5][6] A sheet of the 1995 season, under the same parallel code and the source code 91-170.22, is IUB-THA-SAK-0019950001.
HortaPharm B.V. also funded Hillig's 2004 study of terpenoid variation in Cannabis, whose paper thanks the firm for a grant. The paper describes his germplasm collection of 157 accessions of known geographic origin, each a small packet of seed obtained from breeders, researchers, gene banks and law-enforcement agencies. It codes their countries by two letters, Th for Thailand. Its voucher specimens, it says, are deposited in the herbarium at Indiana University.[7]
Grow-out
Both labels read Greenhouse grown. Indiana Univ., Bloomington, IN. The label of IND-0149680 adds Used for morphometric analysis in 1996, rep. 1, a germination date of 12 June 1996, a height of 268 cm, weak branching and a vegetative stem aroma. The label of IND-0149682 reads 1996 trial, rep. 2 and gives only the collection date.[5][6] The herbarium's catalogue enters both specimens as cultivated, at the Indiana University Greenhouses and does not georeference them.[1][2] Hillig's 2004 paper describes how the plants of his collection were raised: one to a 13 cm clay pot, fed weekly, with metal-halide lamps lengthening the day to 16 hours during vegetative growth. Male and female plants went to separate greenhouses once their sex showed. He judged fragrance by rubbing the fresh stems and wrote that the stems of plants of narrow-leaflet drug accessions from Thailand smelled pleasantly of green tea.[7]
Specimens and identification
Each sheet carries a leafy branch with long, narrow leaflets and a paper packet. On IND-0149680 the branch bears small rounded fruits; IND-0149682 also has a separate length of stem, pencilled node 3.[5][6] The name is the printed labels'.
