1995 IUB Sakon Nakhon Th-2 Reproduction is a reproduction accession of Cannabis indica grown from seed whose label gives its country of origin as Thailand (Sakon Nokhon), that is, Sakon Nakhon in Thailand. It is known from one herbarium sheet, which Karl W. Hillig made on 7 December 1995 from a plant grown in a greenhouse of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, under the parallel code Th-2. The herbarium of Indiana University holds the sheet as catalogue IND-0149681.[1] GBIF publishes it as preserved specimen occurrence 5070719826.[2]
Seed lot
The typed label names the plant Cannabis indica Lam. and places it in the narrow-leaflet drug biotype. It reads Country of origin: Thailand (Sakon Nokhon) and Seed source: HortaPharm B.V., Amsterdam, Holland, with the source code 91-170.22 and the parallel code Th-2.[3] HortaPharm B.V. also funded Hillig's 2004 study of terpenoid variation in Cannabis, whose paper thanks the firm for a grant. The paper describes his germplasm collection of 157 accessions of known geographic origin, each a small packet of seed obtained from breeders, researchers, gene banks and law-enforcement agencies. It codes their countries by two letters, Th for Thailand. Its voucher specimens, it says, are deposited in the herbarium at Indiana University.[4]
The same parallel code, Th-2, is on two sheets of the 1996 season, one under the same source code 91-170.22 and one under 91-170.20 (IUB-THA-SAK-0019960001).
Grow-out
The label reads Greenhouse grown. Indiana Univ., Bloomington, IN and Used for morphometric analysis in 1995, rep. 4. It gives a germination date of 3 June 1995, a collection date of 7 December 1995, a height of 312 cm, strong branching and a vegetative stem aroma.[3] The herbarium's catalogue enters the specimen as cultivated, at the Indiana University Greenhouses and does not georeference it.[1] Hillig's 2004 paper describes how the plants of his collection were raised: one to a 13 cm clay pot, fed weekly, with metal-halide lamps lengthening the day to 16 hours during vegetative growth. Male and female plants went to separate greenhouses once their sex showed. He judged fragrance by rubbing the fresh stems and wrote that the stems of plants of narrow-leaflet drug accessions from Thailand smelled pleasantly of green tea.[4]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a single tall, branched shoot with narrow leaflets and dense flowering heads, a paper packet, the herbarium stamp number 148943 and the collection number 00126.[3] The name is the printed label's.
