Haschischine is a name used in French, Belgian and Spanish pharmacy for a purified alcoholic extract of hemp, and for the syrup, oil and potion made from it. Kenzi Riboulet-Zemouli and Josep Allué Creus, who studied the formularies used in Barcelona between 1870 and 1941, write that two French pharmacists of the late 1840s developed nearly the same method of extraction, repeated percolation with alcohol followed by washing with water, and named their products "cannabine" and "haschischine". The two words became synonyms among Spanish doctors and pharmacists and remained "generic names for purified alcoholic hemp extract" throughout the period they studied.[1]
Laneau's formulas
Spanish medical and pharmaceutical writing on hemp often cited the Belgian Joseph-François Laneau (1818–1865), head pharmacist of the Hôpital Saint-Jean in Brussels. Riboulet-Zemouli and Allué Creus compare his place in Spanish sources to that of O'Shaughnessy in English-language ones. They tabulate three of his preparations from the formularies:[1]
- Haschischine syrup: 40 grammes of simple syrup at 35°, 0.2 grammes of hemp extract and 20 drops of anhydrous alcohol, recorded from 1870 to 1900. Another version replaced the alcohol with chloroform.
- Haschischine oil: 0.4 grammes of hemp extract in 30 grammes of sweet almond oil, recorded from 1871 to 1900.
- Haschischine potion: 90 grammes of distilled water of mint, cinnamon or apple, 30 of simple syrup, 8 of sugar, 8 of gum arabic and 2 to 4 grammes of hemp extract, recorded from 1871 to 1900.[1]
Dausse
The Paris laboratories of Dausse, among the main suppliers of hemp extract to Spanish pharmacies, had a method of physiological standardisation for their hemp extracts by 1907. Riboulet-Zemouli and Allué Creus list nine standardised extracts that Dausse offered, the first of them "Haschischine", a hydro-alcoholic soft extract of "Indian hemp", and another a fluid extract of haschischine.[1]
