Gillet s.n., Banza-Boma is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected at Banza-Boma, in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was then the Congo Free State, in 1901 by J. Gillet. Meise Botanic Garden holds the sheet as catalogue BR0000014662683.[1] GBIF publishes the gathering as preserved specimen occurrence 1839971826.[2] The sheet carries no collector number, so it is titled by collector, locality and year.
Collection and locality
The label of the Herbier du Jardin botanique de l'État in Brussels carries the place name Banza-Boma in manuscript.[3] The year is the only date the record gives.[1][2]
Specimen and identification
The catalogue determination is Cannabis sativa L.[1] The sheet is annotated with the symbol for a female plant, and the mounted material is sparse, a single stem with a few remaining leaves and flowers.[3]
The collector's own flora
Nine years after this gathering Gillet published a flora of the Kisantu region with E. Pâque, recording for each plant an indigenous name, a scientific name and a use.[4] It enters Cannabis sativa under the Kikongo name diamba and states that hemp n'est cultivé que pour l'usage qu'en font les fumeurs, that it is cultivated only for the use smokers make of it. Gillet characterised that use as leaving smokers de plus en plus hébétés et abrutis.[4]
Banza-Boma lies inside the region that flora covers, so the name and the statement of purpose are the collector's own record for the ground this sheet came from.
The entry immediately following is diamba di nseke, savanna hemp, which the flora identifies as Indigofera capitata, a legume that resembles cannabis and carries no recorded use.[4]
