Evidentiary scope

The label carries the place name Banza-Boma in manuscript, with the year 1901 and the collector J. Gillet. It gives no month, elevation, habitat, local name or statement of use, and its georeference is unconfirmed. In a flora of the Kisantu region, written with E. Pâque and published nine years after this gathering, Gillet stated that hemp n'est cultivé que pour l'usage qu'en font les fumeurs (is cultivated only for the use smokers make of it). That is a general statement about the region. It does not describe this plant or say where it grew, so nothing shows whether this plant was cultivated, grew wild or had escaped. The accession is classified Unknown. It shows no continuing population and no living germplasm holding, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

The point -4.95, 15.15 is the catalogue's own georeference for Banza-Boma, a point that falls in Madimba territory in Kongo Central. The name is not carried by OpenStreetMap. GeoNames lists one Banza Boma, a village in Kasangulu territory 46.9 km to the north-east, which is not the holder's place; the holder's point lies 20.8 km from Kisantu (GeoNames), where Gillet's mission was, and it is the one used. The catalogue states no accuracy. Its figures are whole arc-minutes, which allow about 1.3 km of error on their own; with the village's own extent, which no map gives, the point places the gathering at Banza-Boma to within about 3 km and no closer. Basis: holder's georeference. Uncertainty: about 3 km.
