Gillet 2027 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected in 1901 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was then the Congo Free State, by J. Gillet. Meise Botanic Garden holds the sheet as catalogue BR0000014662676.[1] GBIF publishes the gathering as preserved specimen occurrence 1839971811.[2] It is the earliest Congolese cannabis sheet in that collection, and also the least localised.
Collection and locality
The label of the Herbier du Jardin botanique de l'État in Brussels reads leg. J. Gillet 1901 and Collect. J. Gillet n. 2027.[3] It carries no place of collection, and the catalogue records the locality as s.l., sine loco, without a place.[1] The country is the only geography the record supports, and the year is the only date.
Specimen and identification
The sheet is annotated as carrying both staminate and pistillate material.[3] The catalogue determination is Cannabis sativa L.[1]
Notes
Gillet published a flora of the Kisantu region with E. Pâque in 1910, which enters Cannabis sativa under the Kikongo name diamba and states that hemp is cultivated only for the use smokers make of it.[4]
