De Wulf 554 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected in Bas-Uele, in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was then the Belgian Congo, on 9 January 1935 by A. De Wulf. Meise Botanic Garden holds the gathering on two sheets, catalogue BR0000014662782 and catalogue BR0000014662799.[1] GBIF publishes them as separate records, occurrence 1839971984 and occurrence 1839972004, though both carry the same collector, number, date and locality and are therefore one gathering.[2]
Collection and locality
The handwritten label reads Collection A. Dewulf, Bas Uele, the date 9-1-35 and the number 554.[3]
Specimen and identification
The label names the plant chanvre, the French for hemp, and gives the local name as bangi, attributed to the Avande, the spelling used on the label for the Azande.[3] The sheet is annotated with the symbol for a male plant, so the mounted material is staminate.[3] The catalogue determination is Cannabis sativa L.[1]
The same name is recorded on two other Congolese cannabis sheets at Meise, as Bangi in Turumbu on Louis 16015 (1939) and as Mbangi in Swahili on Gille 77 (1937), from three widely separated parts of the country.
