Gille 77 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected in the territory of Beni, in what is now North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was then the Belgian Congo, in 1937 by P. Gille. Meise Botanic Garden holds the sheet as catalogue BR0000014662805.[1] GBIF publishes the gathering as preserved specimen occurrence 1839972031.[2]
Collection and locality
The handwritten label is numbered 77 and reads Territ. de Beni with Cueilli en 37, collected in 1937.[3] The year is all the label gives, and GBIF likewise carries no month or day.[2]
Specimen and identification
The label names the plant chanvre, the French for hemp, and records vernacular names in two languages of the region, Mbangi in Swahili and a closely similar form in Kinande, the language of the Beni area.[3] The sheet is annotated with the symbol for a male plant, so the mounted material is staminate.[3] The catalogue determination is Cannabis sativa L.[1]
Recording the name in two languages on one label is unusual in this group of sheets, and it places the Swahili term alongside a local Bantu one at the same spot.
