Cowan s.n., Darjeeling is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from the Calcutta botanic garden's Flora of Darjeeling series. It is credited to J. M. Cowan and dated 3 August 1923. Its field slip gives the name Gangajat, written गानजा जात in Devanagari.[1] The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248813.[2] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 575048674.[3]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries a printed label of the Herb. Hort. Bot. Calcuttensis for the Flora of Darjeeling, with the collector printed as Coll. J. M. Cowan. Its number, name, locality and altitude lines are blank. Its date line carries the printed century 19.[1] A handwritten field slip gives the date as 3/8/23. Its place line begins From. The word after it cannot be read with certainty.[1]
The RBGE catalogue and GBIF give the date as 3 August 1893.[2][3]
Field observations
The slip opens with the name Gangajat, followed by गानजा जात in Devanagari. Its notes read On the dry land, 2 Feets high (about 0.6 m) and It is a plant Brought from. The last word of that line is not securely legible.[1]
Specimen and identification
A printed slip reads Determinavit:- K. Biswas, with Cannabis sativa Lin. pencilled above it.[1] The catalogue records the specimen as Cannabis sativa L., collected by John Macqueen Cowan.[2]
