Christison s.n., Simla is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from Simla, now Shimla, dated 1859. Its label signs the gathering with the initials A. C.; a pencil note on the sheet reads Alexander Christison. Shimla is in Shimla District, Himachal Pradesh, India. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248827.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 574716620.[2]
Collection and locality
The label is written in one hand in brown ink. It reads Cannabis sativa . var: indica, then Male and Female plants., then Simla, Northern India. followed by A. C. 1859.[3] It gives no altitude, no habitat, no collection number and no month.[3]
The catalogue dates the sheet to 1859 and names no collector. It gives no locality.[1][2]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries two stems. One bears dense fruiting clusters and the other loose flowering branches, which matches the label's Male and Female plants.[3] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa var. indica. The catalogue records it under the same name.[3][1]
A violet stamp above the plants reads Herb. James McNab Demonstration Coll., the Edinburgh teaching collection that also holds the two Jameson sheets of 1849.[3] A pencil hand has written Alexander Christison at the foot of the sheet. A pencil 153 sits above the label.[3]
