Ching 8530 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on Huang Shan in Anhui (then Anhwei), China, on 5 July 1925 by R. C. Ching. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E01459315.[1]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries the label of the Herbarium, University of California, deposited by E. D. Merrill, headed Plants of China. It is completed Cannabis sativa Linn., Anhwei Prov. Huang Shan and 8530, R. C. Ching, 7-5-25.[2] The date can be read as 7 May or 5 July 1925. Ching's numbers 8527 and 8531, two other plants held by the Smithsonian Institution, are both dated 5 July 1925, so the sheet is dated 5 July.[3][4]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a single bent, reddish stem with a few small leaves.[2] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa Linn.; the catalogue records Cannabis sativa L.[2][1] Ching had collected cannabis in 1923 south of Sining: Ching 681 (1923); see also Ching 9060 (s.d.), from Anhwei.
