Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant on Huang Shan in July 1925 and gives nothing more: no locality on the mountain, altitude, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high), in two independent readings.

  • Label (printed, completed by hand): HERBARIUM, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA / DEPOSITED BY E. D. MERRILL / PLANTS OF China / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Anhwei Prov Huang Shan / 8530 R.C. Ching 7-5-25.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Huang Shan is a mountain range (Wikidata Q36034), which gives no collection point, and the label gives no altitude. The province field takes Anhui.

Editorial treatment

Date. 7-5-25 is 5 July 1925, not 7 May. Ching's 1925 numbers on GBIF run in date order: 8402–8509, almost all from Chiu Hua Shan, 26–30 June; 8510–8515, 3 July; 8516–8532, 5 July, among them 8527 and 8531 (Smithsonian, catalogued at Wang Shan) and 8528 (Harvard, Huang Shan, July 1925); 8533–8542, 8 July. A date of 7 May would put 8530 before 8402. The month stands first, the American order, which fits the label of the University of California.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's R. C. Ching; the prose links Ren-Chang Ching (秦仁昌, 1898–1986), whose collecting in Anhui in 1925 is recorded in the Harvard botanist index.

Source discrepancies

  • Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
