Chevalier 29457 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Sa Pa, in the mountains of Lào Cai Province, northern Vietnam, at 1,400 to 1,500 m on 7 December 1913 by Auguste Chevalier. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle holds the gathering on two sheets, P06780055 and P06884278.[1][2]
Collection and locality
Both sheets carry Chevalier's printed label Plantes de l'Indo-Chine, numbered 29457 and dated 7/12 1913. One reads Tonkin. Province de Lao-Kay and Cha-pa : 1400 à 1500 mètres d'altitude; the other gives the same place and height in shorter form.[3][4] The catalogue gives the locality as Tonkin : Province de Lao-Kay, Cha-pa, the date as 7 December 1913 and the elevation as 1,400 to 1,500 m.[1]
The two sheets reached Paris by different routes. The museum label on P06884278 reads Reçu le 29 Août 1923 (received 29 August 1923); the one on P06780055 places it in the Herbier d'Indochine that Chevalier gave to the museum in 1943.[4][3]
Specimen and identification
Both sheets carry branches with dense fruiting tops. The labels name the genus only, Cannabis.[3] The catalogue records the plant as Cannabis sativa L., determined by Querido.[1] The labels give no use, local name or note on cultivation.
