Cave s.n., Tista is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected by G. H. Cave on the Tista at 1,000 feet, about 305 m, on 1 July 1913. The Tista, now usually written Teesta, runs out of Sikkim into West Bengal, India. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248815.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 574898198.[2]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries one typed label, headed HERB. HORT. BOT. REG. EDIN. and FLORA OF EASTERN HIMALAYA. Under the name Cannabis sativa L. it gives Tista with 1,000 ft. on one line and Coll. G. H. Cave with 1.7.1913 on the next.[3]
The label names no district, no bank of the river and no habitat. The catalogue carries no locality.[3][1] Cave was curator of the Lloyd Botanic Garden at Darjeeling from 1904 to 1928 and collected through Sikkim and the Darjeeling hills with William Wright Smith.[4]
Specimen and identification
The mounted material is a leafy branch with broad leaflets and small flower clusters in the axils, pressed with several side shoots.[3] The typed label names the plant Cannabis sativa L. The catalogue records it under the same name and gives the collector as Cave, George H.[3][1]
