Woodrow s.n., Poona is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa credited to G. M. Woodrow (1846 to 1911) at Poona, now Pune in Pune District, Maharashtra, India.[1] The sheet carries no date, so the title carries his death year as its limit. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds it as catalogue E00248822.[2] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 575073573.[3]
Collection and locality
A narrow label at the foot of the sheet carries two hands. In pencil it reads Cannabis sativa, L; in red ink below that it reads Mr Woodrow Poona.[4] The red line is the only source for the place and the collector. There is no date, no altitude, no habitat and no collection number.[4] The catalogue gives the collector as Woodrow, G. M. and carries no date and no locality.[2][3]
The title page of Woodrow's Gardening in India, printed at Bombay in 1903, gives him as formerly Professor of Botany, College of Science, Poona.[5]
Specimen and identification
The specimen is a whole plant and not a cut branch. Its root ball is pressed at the lower left, the stem runs the width of the sheet and the top carries five dense female heads.[4] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L. and the catalogue records it under the same name.[4][2]
