Weining (威宁) is a cannabis growing area of north-western Guizhou, China, drawn on Weining County, in the city of Bijie. Seed of a hemp landrace, CZ32, was collected there in 2020 and is held in the National Gene Bank of Traditional Chinese Medicine.[1] In October 2026 a pupil on the way to school found six cannabis plants, which the police pulled up.[2]

Landrace

Jun Li and colleagues collected the achenes of twenty hemp landraces in nine provinces of China in 2020 for a study of their chemistry, and stored the seed in the National Gene Bank of Traditional Chinese Medicine, at the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica.[1] Their landrace CZ32 comes from Weining, in Bijie. Its achenes are small and dark, at 29.3 g per thousand.[1]: Table S1

Hempen clothes

On one of his journeys of 1882 to 1884, Alexander Hosie passed north-east of Wei-ning Chou among Miao at work in their fields: "The women were as usual clad in their native dress, while the men wore coarse hempen clothes in Chinese style."[3]: 152

Plants found in 2026

On 15 October 2026 a pupil of a primary school in Weining County recognised plants on the way to school as suspected cannabis, from what the pupil had learned at school, and telephoned the police without touching them. The police identified six cannabis plants, pulled them up and took them away, and reprimanded and instructed the people who had planted them.[2]
