Liangshan is a cannabis growing area of south-western Sichuan, China, drawn on the Liangshan (凉山) Yi Autonomous Prefecture, with the neighbouring county of Yanbian, in Panzhihua. Seed of three hemp landraces was collected there in 2020, at Muli and Huili in Liangshan and at Yanbian, and is held in the National Gene Bank of Traditional Chinese Medicine.[1] A genomic study published in 2026 sampled a feral population in Zhaojue County,[2]: Table S1 and the Miao of Yanbian sow hemp seed every June for the fibre of their cloth.[3]
Landraces
Jun Li and colleagues collected the achenes of twenty hemp landraces in nine provinces of China in 2020 for a study of their chemistry. The seed is stored in the National Gene Bank of Traditional Chinese Medicine, at the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica.[1] Three of the twenty come from this area. CZ27, from Muli, and CZ39, from Huili, both in Liangshan, have large, light-coloured achenes, weighing 41.5 and 73.5 g per thousand. CZ21, from Yanbian, in Panzhihua, has small, dark achenes, at 31.4 g per thousand.[1]: Table S1
Feral population
Baishi Wang and colleagues resequenced 271 cannabis accessions from 29 sites in 12 provinces of China, collected under the authority of the narcotics bureau of the Ministry of Public Security.[2] One of their populations, of ten plants classed as feral, comes from Zhaojue County, Liangshan, at 28.01° N; the table prints an altitude of 520 m for the site.[2]: Table S1
Hemp cloth
Yanbian's Miao weaving was entered on the fourth list of the intangible cultural heritage of the city of Panzhihua on 3 July 2020. In the craft the listing describes, the ground is levelled and hemp seed (火麻籽, huǒmá zǐ) sown every June, and the stalks are cut in the middle of August and dried. The fibre is stripped by hand, spliced, twisted, boiled and spun, and the cloth is woven, boiled again several times, waxed and pressed; one garment takes dozens of steps.[3]
The Lisu of Dechang County, in Liangshan, weave a cloth of huǒcǎo (火草) and hemp. The women twist the white down from the underside of the leaves of huǒcǎo, a plant of the local hills, into thread and weave it with hemp thread; the fibres named are those of huǒcǎo and huǒmá (火麻). A co-operative founded in early 2016 revived the craft.[4]
Herbarium specimen
T. T. Yü collected cannabis at Xichang (Sichang), the seat of the prefecture, in 1932 (Yu 1220 (1932)).[5]
