Watt 9644 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected on the descent from Bathad to Manglaur, in what is now Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh, India, on 1 October 1888 by George Watt. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248828.[1] GBIF publishes it as preserved specimen occurrence 574978041.[2] Neither catalogue record supplies a locality, elevation or field observation; those details survive on Watt's label.[3]
Collection route
Watt dated the gathering Oct. 1st 1888, recorded an altitude of 6,500 feet and gave the locality as On the descent to Manglaur from Bathad.[3] The altitude converts to 1,981 m, which is stored in the infobox. A contemporary gazetteer describes the Manglaur–Bathad road as a 17-mile stage along the Tirthan valley, with Bathad in a tributary valley.[4]
Cultivation observation
Watt added a field observation beneath the locality:
[3]“A custom in this & in many other localities only the female plants are allowed to grow. Apparently the males are after fecundation of the female removed from the fields or broken down & left in the fields to rot.”
This is direct evidence that growers distinguished the sexes and removed male plants from cultivated fields.
Specimen and identification
The label identifies the mounted plant as female and annotates it Cannabis ♀ sativa.[3] The fruiting specimen and the catalogue determination both support Cannabis sativa L.[1]
