Takeo is a landrace cannabis growing area covering Takeo Province, Cambodia, in the Southern Cambodia growing region. Its cultivation is centred on the Bayong Kor hills of Kirivong district, on the border with Vietnam, which form the Kirivong appellation. In January 2023 a deputy secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs named the province, and Kiri Vong district within it, as the country's largest cannabis-growing area.[1]
Geography
The growing area is the whole province. A 2021 provincial police report placed the Bayong Kor hills in four communes of Kirivong district near the Cambodian-Vietnamese border: Preah Bat Choan Chum, Prey Ampok, Som and Kiri Chung Koh. The same report called the range ideal for growing cannabis and smuggling it to Vietnam.[2] Plots lie in forest away from the villages, beside streams and lakes or among rocks in the hills.[2][3][4]
Cultivation
In December 2021 the provincial police chief, Chheang Phannara, said that growing cannabis in Preah Bat Choan Chum commune "is not a new practice and it has been going on for many generations". The commune police chief said most people in the commune had grown it because of its price, 140,000 to 160,000 riel (US$35 to 40) a kilogram of dried leaf, sold to Vietnamese traders who came to buy it there.[3] The provincial anti-drug bureau chief said in August 2021 that a crop took three months to grow and that growers replanted on the eastern side of the hills when police cleared the western side.[4]
From 2019 to mid-2021 police in Kirivong district uncovered 97 cultivation operations, burned crops at 443 locations covering 609,687 m² (about 61 ha), destroyed 282 irrigation reservoirs and seized 80.5 kg of dried cannabis.[2] In 2022 the authorities found 32 cases of cultivation in the country and arrested five growers, all of them local.[1] Annual raids and their totals are set out in Cannabis eradication in Kirivong.
Growers from Takeo have also been found working elsewhere. In 2021 a man from the province grew nearly 7,000 plants on Bunong land in Mondulkiri, among the landowners' vegetables,[5] and in 2015 owners from Takeo held the pepper plantation in Chhuk district, Kampot, where 2,622 plants were seized.[6]
