Stainton 586 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected at Ranipauwa, north of Beni in Nepal, on 23 May 1954 by J.D.A. Stainton with W.R. Sykes and L.H.J. Williams. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248811, a single sheet filed under Cannabaceae in herbarium region 5E.[1] GBIF publishes the gathering as preserved specimen occurrence 575095723.[2] The catalogue entry carries no locality, elevation or habitat note; those details are legible on the sheet's printed label in the herbarium's digitised image.[3]
Collection and locality
The printed label is headed Ex Herbario Musei Britannici and Flora of Nepal. It records the locality as Ranipauwa, N. of Beni, an elevation of 3,500 ft and the date 23.5.1954, and it names the collectors as Stainton, Sykes and Williams under number 586.[3] GBIF expands the collectors to John David Adam Stainton, William Russell Sykes and Leonard Howard John Williams. It resolves the date as 23 May 1954.[2]
The label's elevation of 3,500 feet is about 1,067 metres, and the infobox stores the rounded metric figure.[3]
Specimen and identification
The catalogue determines the sheet as Cannabis sativa L.[1] The label's field note reads In field. Height 4 ft. Flowers green., recording a plant of about 1.2 m standing in a field, in flower and with green flowers, when it was gathered.[3]
Stainton 1590 (1954) is a further cannabis gathering by the same three collectors, made in the Kali Gandaki valley on 6 July 1954.
