Soulié 844 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Ta-tsien-lou (Tatsienlou, now Kangding), in the principality of Kia-la in what its labels call eastern Tibet, now in Sichuan, China, in 1893 by the missionary J. A. Soulié. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds four sheets of it: P06781393,[1] P06884292,[2] P06884274[3] and P06884275.[4]
Collection and locality
The field label of P06781393 is a printed form headed (Année 1893), Histoire naturelle (Botanique), Thibet oriental and Principauté du Kia-la. It is completed by hand with the month Août, the number N° 844, the place Tatsienlou and the collector J. A. Soulié, Missionnaire Apostolique.[5] The two old slips of P06884292 give the number N° 844., the month Sept. with a year of the 1890s, and Tatsienlou.[6]
The museum labels of P06781393, P06884274 and P06884275 are the same printed label, Thibet oriental. Ta-tsien-lou (Principauté de Kiala). J.-A. Soulié. 1893., each with the figure 138 written on it. P06884275 came to the museum with the herbarium of E. Drake.[5][7][8]
Specimen and identification
P06781393 carries a branched flowering stem with open flower clusters and narrow leaflets, and P06884292 a branched flowering stem.[5][6] P06884274 carries three slender flowering stems and an empty fragment packet, and P06884275 two flowering stems and a fragment packet.[7][8] The labels and the catalogue name the plant Cannabis sativa L.[5][1] Soulié gathered cannabis again at Tsekou: Soulié 1224 (by 1903).
